Madeira’s Virtual Wood Inlay Artefact Museum

The approach

We approached the Museu Virtual dos Embutidos da Madeira as a cultural encounter — combining heritage, craftsmanship and digital clarity. The visual identity was conceived to evoke tradition and contextual relevance, while the digital experience was designed to provide intuitive access to stories, images and archival content.

A restrained colour palette, paired with typographic clarity and custom graphic elements, was developed to reflect both authenticity and legibility. The digital interface was mapped with user experience in mind — prioritising ease of navigation, visual hierarchy and meaningful interaction.

Museu Virtual dos Embutidos da Madeira — Visual Identity & Digital Experience

A visual identity and user-centred digital system for cultural heritage.

The MUvEMMA project, Madeira’s virtual wood inlay artefact Museum, is an initiative by the Folklore and Ethnographic Group of Boa Nova Association. The museum showcases pieces of furniture and related items crafted by various master wood inlay artists in Madeira since the 19th century. The pieces are organized into three distinct categories: tables, boxes, and other items, in addition to a collection area and a heritage section.

Originating from different collections, the museum’s pieces display varied decorative motifs, including classic geometric patterns, compositions inspired by Madeira’s endemic and indigenous flora, and iconic representations of Madeira’s architectural and ethnographic heritage.

The virtual museum aims to provide an immersive and educational experience to users, allowing for detailed three-dimensional visualization, where each visitor can appreciate the unique characteristics and details of each piece as if they were physically present.

The system bridges visual identity and digital experience — ensuring continuity across screens and communications.

The outcome

The result is a coherent visual identity and digital experience that celebrates a unique cultural heritage while delivering a clear, engaging and accessible user journey. Applied across a virtual platform and supporting communication materials, the system enhances recognition, invites exploration and connects audiences with the history and stories of Madeiran embutidos.

Museu Virtual dos Embutidos da Madeira is a visual identity and digital experience developed for a virtual cultural institution dedicated to the heritage of Madeiran smoked and cured meats.

The challenge was to create an identity and communication system that could translate a centuries-old gastronomic tradition into a contemporary digital platform — balancing heritage with clarity and accessibility.
